08/12: Microsoft Looks to Get Royalties from Xbox Peripheral Makers

According to C|Net, that's the plan:
I don't mind it... it's something I could personally go either way on and understand. I mean, on one hand you have the fact that these companies wouldn't be able to earn this revenue for selling Xbox peripherals if there was no Xbox. On the other hand, that type of logic may lead (or be misconstrued to lead) to other companies being able to ask for royalties on things that are a bit more questionable. Of course, it's not without precedent, as the article goes on to state... and it may be used as a way of helping to ensure quality.

Only accessory makers that get Microsoft's blessing and fork over a slice of their sales to the software maker will be able to produce Xbox 360 game pads, steering wheels, joysticks and other controllers.
In addition, in order to ensure that only authorized products connect to the new console, Microsoft is adding a security mechanism that will be available exclusively to those who sign a deal with the company, according to documents from a peripheral company filed with the SEC.
